After a hearty breakfast at the Fairfield Inn in Gillette, WY we headed west toward Cody, WY on scenic roads I90, US 16, US 20 and Wyoming Highway 120. Our first stop was at an overlook above Buffalo, WY where we could see the city below. From Buffalo we went southwest through the Powder River country at 9,666 feet above sea level and saw the temperature drop from a nice 78 degrees to 59 degrees at the top of the pass. We saw beautiful mountain scenes one after the other as we went through winding and climbing roads. After gassing up in Ten Sleep and eating some Mexican food in Worland, we took the state road back to the northwest toward Cody. We saw some desert country as well as some good farming areas where hay and sugar beets seem to be the main crops. The temperature reached 93 degrees but did not seem too bad as it was dry and windy.

After checking in at the Holiday Inn in Cody, we headed over to the Buffalo Bill Historical Center and stayed until closing at 6:00 PM. This museum is excellent and has several top-notch areas to visit including western art, firearms, Plains Indians, nature and of course a huge area devoted to Buffalo Bill Cody. Three hours was not enough time to see everything, I would recommend at least 4 or 5 hours. I only saw half of the guns and little of the nature area.

For dinner we ate with many other tourists at the old Irma Hotel in downtown Cody. The Irma Hotel was built by Buffalo Bill Cody in 1902 and named after his daughter. There was a rodeo in town we wanted to go to but decided to call it a night as we are heading out early tomorrow for Yellowstone!!!
