We are off traveling again and headed west with our ultimate destination of Boise, ID by Friday, July 16 with goals of seeing many sites along the way. Our first stop was lunch in Mitchell, SD at an excellent BBQ place that served great brisket with burnt ends. After that, we spent some time at the Mitchell Corn Palace in Mitchell. The theme for 2010-11 is "Through the Ages" and made for a nice first stop. Marilyn's last trip here was in the 50's and she remembered there was no air conditioning!!!!
Our second stop was at Big Al's Oasis at Oacoma, SD where we had apple pie and 5 cent coffee. After that we had our picture taken with the buffalo and watched three young adults jump off a high cliff into the Missouri River. Then we stopped at the 1880's town near Belvidere, SD where we toured an old western town and saw many, many old western artifacts of cowboys, Indians, and US Cavalry. We saw many of the props used in the making of "Dances with Wolves" which was made within 30-40 miles of this town. My favorite was the picture of 7 of the surviving Indians of the Little Big Horn at a reunion in 1948. These Indians were very young when they fought and were in their 70's and 80's at the reunion.
The last leg of the day was a three hour drive through the Badlands of South Dakota. We saw Big Horn Sheep, Pronghorn Antelope and lots of beautiful scenery. After a long, long day we finally called it quits and spent the night in Rapid City near Highway 16 to make a short trip to Mt. Rushmore on Monday.
